How can you recognize gum recession?

About the typical symptoms of periodontal disease or gum disease

Periodontal disease is a very insidious condition because it develops without any serious symptoms. By the time symptoms appear, the disease is already at an advanced stage.

That is why it is important to be aware of the symptoms that almost certainly indicate that you have periodontal disease or gum recession.

Budapest's best dentists at Újbuda Detal

Our clinic offers numerous effective methods for the successful treatment of existing periodontal diseases. The method that will be most effective for your periodontal disease will be determined during a personal consultation based on an accurate diagnosis. During the consultation, we will determine the extent of your periodontal disease or gum bleeding and develop a treatment plan.

Steps for treating gum recession or bleeding gums

Steps in periodontal procedures at Újbuda Dental

1. Accurate diagnosis

The first step towards successful treatment of periodontal disease or bleeding gums. To begin the healing process, the exact cause of gum recession must be identified. The investigation begins with a consultation, the first step of which is to take a panoramic X-ray, which will give your dentist an accurate picture of the current condition of your bone structure. This is followed by a physical examination, during which your dentist will examine your teeth and oral cavity. The results of the examination will show how to successfully combat periodontal disease or bleeding gums.

At Újbuda Dental, we develop a strict treatment protocol for the treatment of precisely defined periodontal disease. These treatments are selected from the following and vary according to the individual problem. The disease can be stopped in the long term and the inflammation can be eliminated if the protocol is followed by the dentist, dental hygienist, and patient.

Since tartar provides a breeding ground for harmful bacteria responsible for periodontal disease, every treatment process begins with thorough dental hygiene treatment to remove tartar and prevent the further spread of harmful bacteria. During dental hygiene treatment, tartar, discoloration, and plaque are removed using a gentle ultrasonic procedure. During the three-session oral hygiene program, patients learn the proper oral care routine.

Tartar that is not removed in time slips from the surface of the teeth under the gum line and settles on the roots of the teeth, where it causes inflammation. The purpose of closed curettage is to remove these inflamed tissues under the gums and thus eliminate the possibility of harmful bacteria settling there. This treatment is performed under local anesthesia using special tartar removal instruments. At the end of the treatment, an antiseptic medication is applied to the gum pockets to prevent further bacterial growth. This procedure is called closed curettage because it does not require exposure of the gums to be successful.

If the closed curettage method cannot be used to remove inflamed tissue because it cannot be fully accessed, then the open curettage method is the solution. The difference between the two methods is that in open curettage, the gum is exposed during treatment to provide easier access for the treating physician to completely remove the inflamed tissue and clean the treated area. Once the treatment is complete, your dentist will suture the exposed gum section and support the healing process with antibiotic treatment. This procedure can be performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia.

In more severe stages of periodontal disease or gum bleeding, simple curettage is no longer sufficient for healing and does not prevent the spread of infection. The essence of repeated disinfection of the entire oral cavity is that we clean all the gum areas in the oral cavity that need treatment several times in a short period of time, thereby stopping the infection. This is done under local anesthesia, using manual tartar removal tools and an ultrasonic depurator, with antibiotic protection.

When tartar penetrates beneath the gum line and settles on the roots of the teeth, harmful bacteria create a gap between the root of the tooth and the gum. This is called a pocket. This pocket is an ideal environment for inflammation to develop and spread. To prevent this, we use a special gel to fill the pockets formed during gum recession, which allows the tissues to regenerate. This procedure can be successful in cases of one or two diseased teeth, because it not only stops or slows down bone loss, but also reverses it.

Periodontal disease causes bone loss, which can lead to tooth loss. Dental implants are an excellent option for replacing lost teeth, but only if bone loss has not reached a level that would compromise the stability of the implant. Thanks to modern dental science, however, we do not have to give up on the possibility of dental implantation even if our bone structure is not perfect, because lost bone structure can be replaced with natural or artificial bone replacement materials. Regenerative bone replacement is performed under local anesthesia with antibiotic protection.

Untreated periodontal disease or bleeding gums can cause gum recession, which causes sensitivity in the neck of the teeth and is also aesthetically disadvantageous in the front teeth area. Gum recession cannot be treated without surgical correction, and the condition of the bone must also be taken into account when planning the surgery. The aim of the surgery is to restore the healthy condition of the gums from both a functional and aesthetic point of view, using microsurgical soft tissue grafting and gum plastic surgery in the affected area. The gum replacement procedure is performed under local anesthesia with antibiotic protection using a special Zeiss dental microscope.

Gum recession or bleeding weakens the supporting structures of the teeth. This leads to loosening and displacement of the teeth. Splinting allows us to stabilize moving teeth by connecting several teeth together, restoring their chewing function. During treatment, a special thin, aesthetic polyethylene thread is attached to the teeth to be connected using tooth-colored filling material. This treatment can increase the chewing ability and lifespan of the teeth, and in many cases, teeth that have fallen out due to periodontal disease can be reattached in this way.

In advanced stages of gum recession or bleeding gums, it may become necessary to remove damaged teeth, as there is no medical option to save them. However, teeth lost in this way can be replaced with dental implants, restoring both chewing ability and aesthetic appearance. This requires adequate bone structure. Implants inserted in a timely manner stop bone degradation and, with the use of regenerative agents, the bone gradually grows around the artificial tooth root. Dental implants are now a simple routine procedure performed under local anesthesia. We support healing with a course of antibiotics. It takes approximately 3-4 months for the implants to fuse with the bone.

The process of periodontal disease development

Accumulated tartar and plaque that is not removed in time acts as a breeding ground for harmful bacteria, causing periodontal disease. This first causes superficial gum inflammation, which then spreads to deeper regions and the tissues supporting the roots of the teeth. This decomposition process causes the gradual destruction of the bone surrounding the teeth. This phenomenon takes place under the gums, so unfortunately, developing gum disease cannot be detected with the naked eye until it has reached an advanced stage.

So, on the surface, periodontal disease might seem like just gum inflammation, but it’s actually way worse than that because it’s really the bone that starts to break down, which can sometimes be an irreversible process.

Bone destruction can lead to tooth loss, which cannot be replaced with dental implants in cases of chronic bone loss.

Prevention of periodontal disease or bleeding gums

Prevention is always the most effective treatment for gum disease. If you have a dental check-up at least twice a year, the chances of you developing gum bleeding or gum disease are very low.

Come to ÚjBuda Dental for a free consultation with a dentist who is experienced in the successful treatment of periodontal disease. During the consultation, we will clearly identify whether you are affected by this widespread disease and, if so, what stage it is at and what the ideal treatment therapy is.

It is recommended to combine this consultation with preventive dental hygiene treatment, which in itself has a preventive effect, as it prevents the accumulation of tartar, which is a breeding ground for periodontal disease.
